Reading Starts at the Very Beginning Of Life!

Books at great prices

After all, from the time our kids are able to hear us read from within the womb, they should be hearing us!  Even more so when they are in this World.  The gifts of READING are proven to be fundamentally beneficial in all areas of life.

From the time our parents first start reading to us, then to reading ourselves we learn so very much! Undoubtedly, from reading comes our important ability to write, share, and communicate.

Is Reading Important?

Certainly people have wondered why reading is so important. Many think “I don’t have the time for that.”  Without a doubt, reading is so important for many reasons! We will explore those important reasons in a moment. First it is important to realize that struggling with reading is absolutely not a sign of being unintelligent. For example, John Corcoran, who wrote The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read, is a very intelligent man. He graduated from High School and College, became a popular High School teacher and later a successful businessman all without being able to read. So many highly intelligent people have struggled with reading.  Although, when properly taught, most people learn to read easily and quickly.

Now, if a man like John Corcoran can succeed without reading, why is reading important? A person should really read Mr. Corcoran’s story to get the feelings of shame, loneliness and fear that he experienced before he learned to read.

He was able to be successful in spite of this major handicap. Indeed, he was a man of intelligence, ability and determination. But, make no mistake, it was this handicap that made his life harder and less enjoyable.

Why Is Reading So Very Important?

1. Reading is a MUST to function in today’s society.

For example, there are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. That is a scary thought, especially for their children. Filling out any application becomes impossible without help. Reading road or warning signs is difficult. Even following a map becomes a chore. Day-to-day activities that so many people take for granted become a source of frustration, anger, and fear.

2. Reading is a vital skill in finding and preforming in a good job.

The majority of well-paying jobs require reading as a part of job performance. For instance, there are reports and memos which must be read and responded to. Poor reading skills increases the amount of time it takes to absorb and react in the workplace. A person is very limited in what they can accomplish without good reading and comprehension skills.

3. Reading is so very important because it develops the mind.

Since the mind is a muscle, it needs exercise. Reading and understanding the written word is one of the ways the mind grows in its ability. Reading to and teaching young children to read helps to develop their language skills. It also helps them learn to listen. Every one wants to talk, but few can really listen. Frequently, lack of listening skills can result in major misunderstandings. Importantly, it can lead to job loss, divorces, breakups, and many other disasters. Some small and some great. Reading helps children [and adults] focus on and understand what someone else is communicating.

4. The BEST part of reading is discovering new things.

Books, magazines and believe it or not,  the Internet are great learning tools which require the ability to read and understand what you are reading. A person who knows how to read can educate themselves in anything and everything that they are interested in. We live in an age where information is overflowing, and reading is the main and best way to take full advantage of it.

Reading Helps To Develop And Expand The Imagination!

5. Reading develops the imagination.

TV and computer games have their place, but they are more like amusement. Amusement comes from two words “a” [non] and “muse” [think]. Hence, amusement is non-thinking activities. With reading, a person can go anywhere in the world…or even out of it! They can be a king, an adventurer, a princess, or… The possibilities are truly endless. Non-readers miss out on amazing, individual experiences.

6. In addition to the above, reading develops the creative side of people.

When reading to children, remember to stop every once in awhile and ask them questions. What has happened so far? What do they think is going to happen next? How would they feel if they were in that characters place? Keep them thinking about the story. When it is over, ask if they can think of a better ending or of anything that can improve it. Did they really liked the story? Why or why not? Encourage them to illustrate the story with their own drawings, or to make up a different story with the same characters. Get their creative juices flowing!

Reading Is A Fundamental Skill

7. Reading helps in developing a good self-image.

Non-readers, or poor readers often have a low opinion of themselves and their abilities. Often they feel as if the world is against them. They feel isolated [everybody else can read – which isn’t true] and behavior problems can surface. They often perform poorly in other subjects because they cannot read and understand the material.  Often causing them to “give up.”

8. See why is reading important?

Let’s keep going… Good reading skills, especially in a phonics reading program, improves spelling. Additionally as students learn to sound out letters and words, spelling becomes easier. Also, reading helps to expand the vocabulary. Reading new words puts them in their memory bank for later use. Seeing how words are used in different contexts can give a better understanding of the word usage and definitions, rather than just the cold facts of a dictionary.

9. There is an old saying, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

Indeed ideas written down have changed the destiny of men and nations for better or worse. Of course ideas will forever continue to flow. We all need to read and research to build on the good ideas and expose the bad ideas before they can bring destruction. Only reading can arm us in this never-ending, life-and-death struggle.

10.Reading is POWERFUL!!

In fact,  the power of written ideas communicated through reading is a crucial reason why some governments are opposed to free and honest communication. Certainly illiterate people are much easier to control and manipulate, they are incapable of doing their own research and thinking. They must rely on what they are told and how their emotions are swayed. There is a very good possibility that this is one of the main reasons phonics was removed from their schools around 100 years ago.

Reading Books Is So Important!

11. Finally,  Reading is important because well, words!

Whether spoken or written, are the building blocks of life. After all, You are the result of words that you have heard or read AND believed about yourself. Important to remember, Who and What you become in the future will depend on the words that you choose to believe about yourself. In fact, people, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words. Think about it.

According to Jonathan Kozol in “Illiterate America,” quoted in “The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read,'” the three top reasons people give for wanting to read are, to read the bible, books, newspapers, and to help their children. In my opinion all of those reasons are great ones! I was a proud parent when my two children started school because they were already able to read.

I think everyone can conclude that reading is a vital skill! Reading Strategies are also a part of learning to read.

Instead of movie night

Perhaps one of your favorite movies is based on a book. Instead of watching it on television dive into the book! Books allow for so much more of the story! You get to watch the story develop in your minds eye, the plots and the characters are how you and you alone want to see it! Detail is so much greater with the power of words. If you love it on the big screen, you’ll get more into it and love it even more when you read.

Do you travel? Perhaps drive or fly a lot? Maybe you should consider passing the time Reading. Audio Books are also a great way help you with your personal growth. Listen to motivational books, or immerse yourself in a romance on the road. Furthermore, being read too is a great way to soak in a story, learn history, and to gain never ending knowledge. This also helps us develop and exercise our own listening skills.   Again it’s all available on this site (that is continually updated).

Make time to exercise your brain by immersing yourself in a good book,  you deserve it!
